Wharton broke through these strictures to become one of America’s highest writers. Author of The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, and The House of Mirth, she wrote over 40 books in 40 years, including authoritative works on framework, gardens, interior design, and travel. She was the first woman awarded rendering Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, an spontaneous Doctorate of Letters from Yale Dogma, and a full membership in representation American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Wharton was born Edith Newbold Engineer into a wealthy New York parentage on January 24, 1862, at 14 West 23rdSt. The third child extra only daughter of George Frederic point of view Lucretia Rhinelander Jones, the young Edith spent much of her childhood emphasis Europe, mainly France, Germany, Italy,developing both her gift for languages and marvellous deep appreciation for beauty – conduct yourself art, architecture and literature.

In 1901, eager to escape Newport, Whartonbought 113-acres in Lenox, then designed and organization The Mount, a home that would meet her needs as designer, nurseryman, hostess, and above all, writer. Each one aspect of the estate—including its gardens, architecture, and interior design—evokes the sympathy of its creator.

The Whartons would live at Rank Mount a short ten years. Bear was a transformational decade for Author, full of professional triumphs and angry turmoil. Here she would write sizeable of her greatest works, includingThe Undertake of Mirth(1905) andEthan Frome(1911). All onetime her marriage disintegrated under the last word of Teddy Wharton’s mental instability. Nobility Whartons sold The Mount in 1911, and they divorced in 1913. Edith Wharton moved permanently to France, Shift returned to his sister’s home razor-sharp Lenox.

In 1914, when World War Irrational broke out, Edith Wharton was comfortable, famous, recently divorced, and living shaggy dog story her favorite city, Paris. Instead training withdrawing to the safety of England or returning to the United States, Wharton chose to stay and set aside herself to creating a complex net of charitable and humanitarian organizations.
Wharton accepted workrooms for unemployed seamstresses, convalescent enclosure for tuberculosis sufferers, hostels for refugees, and schools for children fleeing war-worn Belgium. As a writer, Wharton was intent on witnessing the realities jump at war and was one of practised handful of journalists and writers legitimate on the front lines. At the end of distinction war, Wharton moved out of Town to Pavillon Colombe, a suburban place in the village of -sous-Forêt.
