Early life

Merrick was born in Leicester, England in 5 August 1862. He begun to become deformed when he was 3. He was also disabled provision he hurt his hip. Career

In 1884 Merrick wrote to a showman cryed Sam Torr. Merrick asked Torr be given show him as a "freak" agricultural show. A sawbones doctor, Frederick Treves, came to representation Merrick and took photographs of him. Soon afterwards, Torr's freak shop was closed by the police and Merrick went to Belgium.
